A selection of funding opportunities to support public engagement

 

Royal Society of Biology – Outreach and Engagement Grant Scheme

Individual members of the RSB, around the world, can apply directly for funding to help run an event or activity in their region.
Award: up to £1,000
Application deadline: There is one round of applications in June each year.


Anatomical Society - Public Engagement grants

Members of the Anatomical Society can apply to support outreach and public engagement activities that ignite curiosity in young and old audiences about the anatomy of humans and animals.
Award: up to £500
Application deadline: 6 times a year, with deadlines throughout the year.

The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour - Public Engagement grants

The ASAB Education committee is offering Public Engagement grants for organizing and delivering innovative and exciting outreach activities. These activities should be aimed at young people and/or the general public, to communicate the science of animal behaviour.
Award: up to £2000 – although applications for less than the full amount are encouraged.
Who can apply: This grant is open to individuals and organisations, researchers, schools, museums, libraries and community groups. Members and non-members of ASAB are eligible to apply.

Biochemical Society – Science Outreach Grants

Support for scientific outreach activities that communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the community.
Award: up to £1,000
Application deadline: There are two rounds of applications per year, in September and April.

British Ecological Society – Outreach Grants

BES actively encourages their members to promote ecological science to a wide audience and offers grants of up to £2,000 for outreach activities world-wide that promote ecological science to the public, aimed at a non-academic audience.
Award: up to £2,000
Who can apply: Applications are open to individuals and organisations, including: BES members and non-members; researchers; schools; museums; libraries; and community groups.

British Society for Plant Pathology – BSPP Plant Pathology Promotion Fund

BSPP wishes to promote an understanding and awareness of the importance of plant pathology to a wider audience than its membership. To that end it has established a fund for the promotion of plant pathology, with the aim of stimulating interest in, and knowledge and awareness of, plant pathology to people who do not normally come into contact with the subject.
Award: up to £2,000
Who can apply: All members of the BSPP.

European Society for Evolutionary Biology – Outreach Fund

These grants support projects that promote evolution-related activities.
Award: See website for details.
Application deadline: Proposals will be accepted twice yearly on 15th March and 15th September.

Fisheries Society of the British Isles - Outreach Grants

Grants are available to deliver outreach and engagement activities. Grants will not be awarded for purely conservation purposes or any activity that does not promote the science of fish biology.

Who can apply: FSBI members, teams, and organisations with a FSBI member leading the application.

Genetics Society - Public Engagement Grant

Grants are available to members of the Genetics Society to cover costs associated with travel and materials for public engagement activities relevant to Genetics.

Who can apply: Genetics Society members.

Institute of Physics – Public Engagement Grant Scheme

This scheme provides up to £3,000 to individuals and organisations running physics based events and activities in the UK and Ireland.
Award: up to £3,000
Who can apply: Open to all and provides funding for individuals and organisations. This includes, but is not limited to, members of the Institute of Physics, researchers in academia or industry, museums, community groups, not-for-profit organisations, art groups and libraries.
Current members of the Institute of Physics' Council are not eligible to apply for, or be associated with, a public engagement grant.

Microbiology Society – Education and Outreach Grants

Grants of up to £1,000 are available to support relevant science teaching or promotion initiatives, or to support developments likely to lead to an improvement in the teaching of any aspect of microbiology.
Award: up to £1,000
Who can apply: Microbiology Society School Members, or Full, Full Concessionary or Postgraduate Student Members residing in the UK or Republic of Ireland
Application deadline: There are two rounds of application per year. Closing dates are 1st April and 1st October each year.

Royal Society of Chemistry – Outreach Fund

Through the outreach fund, the RSC aim to encourage and support the development of projects that raise awareness of the place of chemistry in people's everyday lives, especially those not already interested in chemistry as well as developing the science communication skills of people who are already highly trained in chemistry.
Award: Small grants: up to £2,000; large grants: up to £10,000
Who can apply: Open to all, individuals and organisations. This includes, but is not limited to members of the Royal Society of Chemistry, member-led groups, researchers in academia or industry, museums, community groups, not-for-profit organisations, art groups and libraries.

Society for Endocrinology – Public Engagement Grant

To support organisation and delivery of outreach activities, aimed at school children and/or the general public.
Award: up to £1,000
Who can apply: Society of Endocrinology members.

Society for Experimental Biology – Diversity Grant

The Diversity Grant provides funding to help tackle barriers to inclusion and support initiatives that promote diversity in academia and science to help create and support a representative community in experimental biology research. SEB members can apply for funding of up to £1000. This could be used to improve accessibility at research and outreach events, or for projects to increase awareness of the contributions of underrepresented groups in experimental biology for example. Applications welcome throughout the year.

Society for Experimental Biology – Outreach Grant

The SEB aims to empower our members to contribute to the public understanding of science, and to promote engagement with all forms of experimental biology. The Outreach and Engagement Grant provides funding to support outreach events and activities that will reach a variety of public audiences.
Award: up to £1000
Who can apply?: SEB members can apply for up to £1000, and non-members up to £200
Application Deadline: There are two rounds per year on 1 June and 1 October.

The Physiological Society – Public Engagement Grants

Grants of any value up to £20,000 are available to both members and non-members of The Physiological Society to promote the discussion of physiology with public audiences. Collaborative applications, including those between expert science communicators, facilitators of public engagement, artists, musicians, thespians and members are encouraged.
Award: Up to £500 or up to £20,000
Who can apply: Both members and non-members of the Society.

The Royal Society – Partnership Grants

Partnership grants of up to £3,000 are available to schools to enable students, aged five to 18, to carry out science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) projects.
Award: up to £3,000
Who can apply: Applications need to be made jointly between the school and STEM partners where the partnership needs to be established before the start of the application.
