New ideas and new legumes for the future of UK food

Calling all primary and secondary schools in the UK!
Join scientists at the University of Southampton for our Beyond Boring Beans project, recruiting 100 primary and secondary schools to grow six types of beans across the UK. The beans in question will vary from commonly grown broad beans and peas, to more exotic lentils and chickpeas, and finally to legumes rarely grown in the UK (for example lablab).

The experiment will include reporting back on the beans growth rate, size and collecting samples, and will tell us which legumes grow well in different of the country, whether the beans form associations with soil bacteria, and will provide the backbone for a series of classroom experiments.

What does a pack contain?

Each pack will include seeds, tags, sample tubes, pH papers, and instructions / lesson plans.

Who is this suitable for?

This project is suitable for primary or secondary schools. Teachers should sign up on behalf of a class, multiple classes, or a specific group i.e. a STEM club. Up to 20 schools which do not have a garden will be given funds to set up a basic experiment.
